Ecological niche modeling, niche overlap, and good old Rabinowitz’s rarities applied to the conservation of gymnosperms in a global biodiversity hotspot

چکیده
Biodiversity hotspots harbor 77% of endemic plant species. Patagonian Temperate Forest (PTF) is a part biodiversity hotspot, but over the past centuries, has been over-exploited, fragmented and replaced with exotic species plantations, lately also threatened by climate change. Our aim to better understand patterns habitat suitability niche overlap nine gymnosperm species, key elements PTF, complementing traditional approaches conservation. Using R packages 3016 occurrence data, we deployed ecological models (ENM) in MaxEnt via kuenm, classified according Rabinowitz’s types rarity. We then overlapped their niches calculating Schoener's D index, considered rarity spatial context. Finally, overlay high species’ protected areas detected conservation priorities using GapAnalysis. generated simplified ENMs for gymnosperms found that most overlap, only one displayed unique niche. Surprisingly, three have divergent habitats across landscape not related previously published geographic structure neutral genetic variation. showed rarer smaller volume tend have, six out studied priority, there are gaps PTF. approach unprotected suitable native at risk Suggesting integrating habitat-suitability multiple rarity, can be handy tool identify potential global hotspots.

Using ecological niche modeling to determine avian richness hotspots
Understanding distributions of wildlife species is a key step towards identifying biodiversity hotspots and designing effective conservation strategies. In this paper, the spatial pattern of diversity of birds in Golestan Province, Iran was estimated. Ecological niche modeling was used to determine distributions of 144 bird species across the province using a maximum entropy algorithm. Richness...
متن کاملEcological niche modeling of invasive alien plant species in a protected landscape
Non-native plants that can cause adverse effects are otherwise known as invasive alien plant species which pose a major threat to plant biodiversity conservation and sustainability. This study is dedicated to determine the plant diversity and to assess the vulnerability of Quezon Protected Landscape, Southern Luzon, the Philippines to invasive alien plant species. Data from 90 10x10 m randomly ...
متن کاملEcological Niche Modeling of Mountain Vipers from the Raddei Clade in Iran, Caucasus and Eastern Turkey
Mountain vipers of the genus Montivipera, generally, and the species of the Raddei clade, specifically, are interesting examples of species neo-endemism in Iran, Anatolia, and the Caucasus. Given the critical conservation status of these species, it is necessary to identify their suitable habitats for prioritizing conservation measures. We modeled ecological niche of each species based on four ...
متن کاملEcological niche modeling for conservation planning of an endemic snail in the verge of becoming a pest in cardamom plantations in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot
Conservation managers and policy makers are often confronted with a challenging dilemma of devising suitable strategies to maintain agricultural productivity while conserving endemic species that at the early stages of becoming pests of agricultural crops. Identification of environmental factors conducive to species range expansion for forecasting species distribution patterns will play a centr...

Changes in the geographical distribution of plants are one of the major impacts of the climate change. This study was aimed to predict the potential changes in the distribution of Artemisia aucheri Boiss in Isfahan rangelands. Therefore, six bioclimatic variables and two physiographic variables were used under the Generalized Linear Model (GLM), Flexible Denotative Analysis (FDA), Surface Range...
